The body has the vision to be the most trusted agency that protects the American people from the environmental health threats through applying a state-of-the-art science. It also works under the mission to protect the public from exposure and adverse human health effects and the diminished quality of life that may be associated with the hazardous substances at the waste sites and any other pollutants that are present in the environment. The agency usually employs the best science to serve the public, it takes responsive public health actions and informs the public with trusted health information so as to prevent them from exposure to harmful environments and illnesses that arise from toxic substances. The agency is usually directed by the congressional mandate to conduct some specific functions that concern the impact of hazardous materials on public health. Some of the functions include health surveillance and registries, educating and informing the public about hazardous substances, health consultation about some specific harmful substances, and public health assessment of the existing waste sites. At the agency, the commissioned corps officers are usually attached to tasks as per their scientific or managerial knowledge.
