Pablo Picasso

Biography

Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso or better known as Pablo Picasso (Hernández, S.F.). He was born on October 25 in 1881 in the city of Malaga in the country of Spain, he was the eldest of the children of José Ruiz and Blasco and María Picasso López and brother of Dolores y Concepción (Huelin & Vilató, 1954). From a very young age he always showed his great passion for art demonstrating his talent and skill with the brushes, this was due to the fact that art was at home since José Ruiz was a drawing professor (Fermigier, 1969). In 1891 the whole family retired from Malaga since José Ruiz asked to be transferred to the School of Fine Arts located in the city of La Coruña (Moreno, 2009). In 1894 one of Pablo’s sisters, Concepción (Montoya, 2017) died. The following year the family moved to Barcelona where Picasso met a group of artists and writers, including the painters Ramón Casas and Santiago Rusiñol (Ruiza, Fernández, & Tamaro, 2004). He studied for two years at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, and at the age of fourteen years old, the admission exam of the Lonja School (Fermigier, 1969) exceeded.

Once he said that “unlike music, there are no prodigious children in painting. What people perceive as premature genius is the childhood genius. Does not disappear gradually as it ages. It is possible that this child becomes a true painter one day, maybe even a great painter. But I would have to start from the beginning. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, I was not a genius. My first drawings have never been shown in an exhibition of children’s drawings. I lacked the clumsiness of a child, his naivety. I have made academic drawings at the age of seven, with a precision from which I am scared ”. (Picasso, S.F.) In 1912 Picasso underwent an interrogation since he was blamed for Apollinaire for having stolen the Mona Lisa de Leonardo da Vinci, later was exonerated (Kirschbaum, 2011). In the years of 1917 and 1918 Picasso met Olga Koklova on a trip who would become his first wife in 1918, later in 1921 Paulo was born, his first son (Montoya, 2017). On April 26, 1937, the bombing occurred in Guernica by the German Air Force, later Picasso made one of his most famous paintings, "Guernica" which would promote peace (Jara, 2018). Later in 1943 Picasso met Françoise Gilot with whom he would have two children (Ruiza, Fernández, & Tamaro, 2004). Subsequently in 1944 he entered the French Communist Party and between the years of 1955 and 1973, Picasso creates many works of art until on April 8, 1973 he died at age 91 for a pulmonary edema (Montoya, 2017).

On the work he did during his life “it is estimated that Picasso was the author of about 13.500 paintings and designs, 100.000 prints or engravings, 34.000 Illustrations for books and 300 sculptures or ceramics, in addition to having the greatest number of museums with their name ”(Calvo, 2016, P. 6). Therefore, we can conclude that Pablo Picasso was a great representative of the current called Cubism, leaving us his great legacy in art history.
