Academic performance in medical students

When talking about academic performance related to insomnia in medical students, it has been shown that it takes a fundamental role in our cognitive processes and developments which allow us to know, understand, interact and especially understand that within the latter is the compression of thememory, language, perception and thought. It is essential to mention that in those cognitive process visual attention can be affected thus forming a low academic performance. That is why in academic life the ability and effort concepts are not synonymous since as Rubén Edel tells us, the effort is not a sample of success and it is the ability that takes a crucial role. That is, when talking about a failure in a student there is great self – esteem and a good perspective of both their ability and their effort since showing or maintaining a great effort is meaning of having a good skill. Otherwise, if a student does not have a brilliant qualification and call it as a failure, this will make a comparison or relationship between their effort and ability, also showing the meaning of investing more effort is related to littleskill, showing before his folded companions, for that distrust generated. That is why once obtaining these concepts there is a great connection the teachers with their students since the effort is the most valuable concept in a student, therefore the student relates the effort to the ability and approval of the teachers,suffering an inability concept in case it does not triumph.

However, as Covington mentions us (1984) there are 3 types of students:

  • Those who are oriented to domain
  • Those who accept failure
  • Those who avoid failure

 

The first refers to that student who presents a school success, which shows a capacity and high motivation in addition to self-confidence. The second represents that student who is defeated, always showing an appearance of hopelessness, which is shortly after renouncing the effort. Finally, the third personifies the one who does not have self – esteem, does not show an aptitude that according to the SAR is the ability to competently operate a certain activity. In addition, the latter does not show self-protection in its image through attitudes such as: lack of participation within even classroom, delay or absence of carrying out a job in addition to creating academic dishonesty in exams.

That is why, when evaluating academic performance in students, not only would these ability and effort concepts be evaluated but also the deepest information of the student would be used as the concepts learned before taking a class. In addition, the teaching methodologies used by different students are valued. In the same way it is essential to obtain information based on school qualifications, complications today with online classes, and methodologies applied in the study.
